Karen eased into a blue and white vinyl-covered seat as Terry unhooked the boat from the dock. He was humming a tune as he moved with the confidence and grace of someone who had spent countless hours on the craft. With his shorts showing off sturdy legs and a tight-fitting T-shirt leaving little to the imagination, it was an entertaining show.

“If you promise to behave yourself, I won’t make you wear a life jacket.” He slid behind the wheel and fired up the engine.

“Define behave yourself.” Karen grabbed the sides of her seat in response to the vibrations. The sensation was thrilling. She hadn’t been on a boat in years and was looking forward to a little alone time with Terry.

“I figured a teacher with your experience would be well versed with the meaning of behave yourself.” He grinned and put the boat in reverse. The craft eased away from the dock and into the channel in a smooth motion.

“Among middle schoolers, yes. Among adults, not so much. Perhaps you can teach me.”

Her attempt at flirting must have worked because it took him three tries to shift the boat from reverse to forward. Once they were motoring down the channel, he sat and gave Karen a long look.

“Between being a single parent and running my own business, I feel like I’ve already had a lifetime of behaving. It might be fun to spend a few days misbehaving.” The channel widened and Terry increased the craft’s speed.

The end of the channel provided a breathtaking view of the lake. Karen went to the front of the craft to take it all in. In the bright sunshine, the blue water took on every shade of sapphire imaginable. The breeze cooled her while spray kicked up by the boat massaged her. Crafts of all shapes and sizes, from small fishing boats to cruisers as big as her apartment in Seymour, made their way across the water.

Terry turned off the engine to let her absorb the scene in blessed silence. Large birds, hawks or maybe even eagles, floated on the air currents above her. A man along the tree-lined bank to her left cast a line into the water. In front of her, the water stretched on like a blue blanket for as far as the eye could see.

“Beautiful. I don’t know what else to say.” She rested her hands on the aluminum railing. A man and a woman on matching purple jet skis raced across the water, leaving behind a foamy wake that gently rocked the boat.

“How about awesomesauce?” Terry was seated, with his feet propped on the steering wheel’s console and his hands behind his head. He’d taken off his shoes and looked like he belonged on the cover of a Jimmy Buffett album.

“While appropriate, I’m afraid I’d be accused of copyright infringement by someone if I used it.” She slipped her shoes off and wriggled her toes in the all-weather carpeting. “You look … at home.” She wanted to say like the answer to a single girl’s prayers, but wasn’t quite ready to verbalize the thought.
